Rewiring & new installations

Context

A rewire is building work as much as electrical work. The cable route decisions made at first fix determine how the space behaves for decades: where sockets sit, how lighting is switched, how much spare capacity exists, how much disruption a future change will cause. Planning the layout properly is the part that pays back.

Signs that assessment may be needed

• 01Rubber, fabric or aluminium conductors, or wiring of unknown age
• 02Insufficient socket provision leading to permanent extension-lead use
• 03Renovation, extension or change of use that alters the electrical layout
• 04Previous alterations carried out without documentation or testing

None of the above should be investigated by opening equipment, testing live circuits or resetting protective devices repeatedly. If any of it involves heat, smoke, water or a shock, read the safety guidance before anything else.
