EV charging installation

Context

A charge point is a continuous, high-utilisation load — closer in character to plant than to an appliance. The installation question is rarely the unit itself; it is whether the existing supply, board and earthing arrangement can carry it, and how charging behaves alongside everything else in the building.

Signs that assessment may be needed

• 01A new or incoming electric vehicle with no dedicated charging provision
• 02Existing charging via an extension lead or general-purpose socket
• 03Workplace or multi-bay parking requiring several points and load sharing
• 04A board with no spare capacity for a dedicated charging circuit

None of the above should be investigated by opening equipment, testing live circuits or resetting protective devices repeatedly. If any of it involves heat, smoke, water or a shock, read the safety guidance before anything else.
