Fault finding & electrical repairs

Systematic diagnosis of tripping circuits, intermittent faults, dead sockets and unexplained load behaviour.

Context

Electrical faults rarely announce themselves clearly. A breaker that trips once a week, a light that flickers under load or a circuit that only fails in wet weather all point to something measurable — insulation breakdown, a loose termination, a shared neutral or an overloaded final circuit. Fault finding is an investigative discipline: isolate, measure, eliminate, verify.

Signs that assessment may be needed

  • 01A breaker or RCD that trips repeatedly, or resets and trips again
  • 02Warmth, discolouration or a burning smell at an outlet, switch or panel
  • 03Lights dimming or flickering when appliances start
  • 04Sockets or circuits that have stopped working with no obvious cause
  • 05Buzzing, crackling or arcing sounds from fittings or the switchboard

None of the above should be investigated by opening equipment, testing live circuits or resetting protective devices repeatedly. If any of it involves heat, smoke, water or a shock, read the safety guidance before anything else.

General scope

  • Structured circuit isolation to identify the affected section rather than replacing parts speculatively
  • Insulation resistance, continuity, polarity and earth-loop testing where applicable
  • Thermal and load checks on distribution equipment under real operating conditions
  • Repair or replacement of failed accessories, terminations, cabling or protective devices
  • Written record of what was found, what was corrected and what remains recommended

How the work runs

  1. 01ReportYou describe the symptom, when it occurs and what changed.
  2. 02IsolateAffected circuits are safely isolated and proved dead before work.
  3. 03MeasureTesting narrows the fault to a section, device or cable run.
  4. 04CorrectThe defect is repaired or the failed component replaced.
  5. 05VerifyCircuits are re-tested and energised under supervision.
